Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey is our book selection for this month.

When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant, and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Ana’s quiet beauty, wit, and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too—but on his own terms.

Shocked yet thrilled by Grey’s singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success—his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family—Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Grey’s secrets and explores her own dark desires.

Erotic, amusing, and deeply moving, the Fifty Shades Trilogy is a tale that will obsess you, possess you, and stay with you forever.

Rebuilding What Had Been Destroyed

Rebuilding What Had Been Destroyed focuses on how to rebuild your life and restore good human values lost from living through the Sudanese Civil War. It is also written as a testament to what the Southern Sudanese people underwent and how to safeguard oneself when your immediate environment becomes unjust, discriminatory, and corrupt. The book is designed to correct the erroneous behavioral and mental patterns that many Southern Sudanese have had to accommodate or tolerate during five decades of civil war.
Mariak Chuor, the author, is one of the lost boys from Sudan, a group of young boys and girls who were forced out by civil war in their homeland at a young age. The Sudan civil war has raged between the Arab Muslim of the north and the predominantly Christian in the south since his birth. He was born in a small village called Maper, (Twic Mayardit County), Warrap State in South Sudan in 1984. From being born into poverty in Southern Sudan and choosing to be a Christian, he learned early that it takes hard work, faith, hope, self-motivation, a positive attitude, purpose, dedication, commitment, patient, passion, self-confidence, self-control, consistency, and self-discipline to be successful in life. By 1991, Arab militias attacked his village and burned his village. They killed those who were unwilling to be their slaves. The young girls were sold into domestic service. They young boys were either forced to fight or be slaves. As result, Mariak Chuor was separated from his parents when he was eight years old and was forced to join the Sudanese People Liberation Army/Movement (SPLA/M) when he was nine years old. By 1998, he came to Kakuma Refugee Camp, (Kenya) and from Kenya to USA as a refugee. He settled in Richmond, Virginia in December 19, 2000. He is now living in Garner, North Carolina and received his degree from ECPI in computer electrical engineering.
Mariak Chuor was featuring in the 2002 documentary, The Lost Boys Film , by Megan Mylan. Now he is telling his experiences as a Lost Boy in a book, Rebuilding What Had Been Destroyed, which chronicles his experiences and, most importantly, details his vision of the future. Rebuilding What Had Been Destroyed  focuses on building the core values of respect, positive attitude, encouragement, empowerment, and inspiration when one lives in a broken world.

June's Reading Selection

Same Kind of Different As Me

Ron Hall and Denver Moore

Meet Denver, a man raised under plantation-style slavery in Louisiana in the 1960s; a man who escaped, hopping a train to wander, homeless, for eighteen years on the streets of Dallas, Texas. No longer a slave, Denver's life was still hopeless-until God moved. First came a godly woman who prayed, listened, and obeyed. And then came her husband, Ron, an international arts dealer at home in a world of Armani-suited millionaires. And then they all came together.
But slavery takes many forms. Deborah discovers that she has cancer. In the face of possible death, she charges her husband to rescue Denver. Who will be saved, and who will be lost? What is the future for these unlikely three? What is God doing?
Same Kind of Different As Me is the emotional tale of their story: a telling of pain and laughter, doubt and tears, dug out between the bondages of this earth and the free possibility of heaven. No reader or listener will ever forget it

Unspoken Lies
Darrien Lee

Cherise McKenzie, an Atlanta crime scene investigator, and her husband, Detective Mason McKenzie, have experienced some turbulent ups and downs in their marriage over the years. With demanding careers and two children, the McKenzies find themselves spending more time apart than together, which allows infidelity with a trusted loved one to darken their doorstep.
It is only through a series of near tragic events and a lot of prayer that the young couple is able to rebuild their lives and rekindle the love they once shared. Everything is going great for the McKenzies, and their careers now compliment their lives instead of complicating it. Mason and Cherise are determined to keep family first in their lives; however, their devotion will be tested once again when tragedy strikes, leaving Cherise to make a decision that could not only cost her marriage, but the one person she loves more than life itself.
